eyelid surgery

One of the first signs of aging occurs around the eyes. Excessive skin folds and fat pockets become apparent making individuals look “tired” and older than their age. Skin folds on the upper eyelids can droop enough to even impair vision.

As a board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Sieveking routinely performs eyelid rejuvenation surgery, also known as upper and lower blepharoplasty, alone or in combination with other procedures such as facelifts, brow lifts, rhinoplasty, and others.

The delicate nature of the structures of the eyelid mandate expertise and a “gentle touch” in the surgery. Dr. Sieveking evaluates each patient on an individual basis and employs variations of the blepharoplasty operation to achieve appropriate and natural results for each individual patient. The benefits of performing the appropriate operation for the individualized patient are a smooth, natural look that generates comments such as “you look rested….there’s something different about you…” The risks of patients receiving the wrong choice of eyelid procedures can be devastating:

Choosing the correct eyelid procedure for each individual patient is paramount! Results can be catastrophic if a patient receives the incorrect technique, or choice of operation, in eyelid rejuvenation surgery. Quite often, patients come to my office with problems related to poorly performed eyelid surgeries performed by inexperienced and under qualified physicians. It is important to choose a board certified plastic surgeon with a rich experience in eyelid surgery. Bad surgeries can lead to excessive hollowing of the eyes with eyes that “pop out” or appear “bug-eyed”. Over-treatment can lead to eyelid retraction and difficulty closing the eyelids. These are all difficult problems to fix. The best time to get the perfect result is the first time.   – Nicholas E. Sieveking MD

Most of the time, the blepharoplasty operation requires some degree of sedation and is therefore performed in a certified operating room.

In his office at 204 23rd Avenue North in Nashville, TN, Dr. Sieveking does perform minor work on the eyelids, but the majority of his patients have their surgeries scheduled at Centennial Medical Center as either “twilight” sedation or a general anesthesia.

At the Sieveking Center, Dr. Sieveking does perform eyelid laser and resurfacing procedures to smooth and tighten the skin on the upper and lower eyelids without surgery or scarring (see “Laser Services” tab or visit www.sciton.com) These laser procedures, however, are not substitutes for surgery and cannot achieve the full results of a blepharoplasty operation when surgery is truly indicated.
